Garage Door Maintenance and Safety

Your garage door should be inspected and routine maintenance performed throughout the year to ensure the continuation of safe and smooth operation. Maintenance for doors is virtually the same, regardless of what type of system you have.

  • Check for debris on the tracks that might catch the rollers. Remove by wiping or vacuuming.
  • Use regular engine oil, not grease, to lubricate the rollers.
  • Apply a drop or two of oil to each roller. The rolling action of the door will draw it into the bearings.
  • Make sure springs are tight and connected and cables are not frayed.
  • Lightly lubricate any garage door hinges, bearings and chains.
  • Be sure that the spring stays “wet” (lightly lubricated). A dried out spring will jam your system.
  • A garage door is not a toy!
    • Children should not play under garage doors or be allowed to access the operating system or remote controls.
  • Always keep an eye on the door until it is fully opened or fully closed. Do not try to enter or exit the garage while the door is still moving.
  • Remember your garage door opener uses electricity, which can shock or kill if mishandled.
  • Contact a trained service technician for any repairs that may be needed. News, Headlines, Newsletter
